The season starts as soon as we can safely get on the fields. This is usually early to mid-May depending on the weather.
The season ends at the end of June for Minor, Major and Junior divisions of both Softball and Baseball. This is because the All-Star season begins in July.
T-Ball and coach pitch divisions usually extend into mid to late-July. The weather is good, the fields are in good condition and the kids are having fun.
How many games/practices are there each week? First, there are no games played on weekends during the regular season. There are games after the opening day ceremonies that are usually held on a Saturday. Alaska has too many summer opportunities to spend every weekend playing ball, even if they are the greatest sports on earth. T-Ball – There are usually 2 games per week with practices as the coach schedules.
Coach pitch – There are usually 2 games per week and practices as needed.
Minor baseball – There are 3 games per week and often a practice.
Major baseball - There are 3 games per week and usually a practice or 2.
Junior baseball – There are 3 games per week and usually a practice or 2.
Softball – Minor through Junior softball schedules are interleague throughout the city and can vary from 1 game per week to 3 per week. Practices will be common.
What division should my child play in? In general, 5-6 year old will be in T-Ball.
Seven and 8 year olds will be in coach pitch.
Nine through 12 year olds will be in Minors or Majors.
Players age 13-15 will be in Juniors.
There are levels above 15 in Little League, but these players are usually playing in High School.
Players who wish to play in Majors and Juniors must tryout to make a team. All 12 year-olds will make a Major team after they tryout. All 13-15 year-olds will make a Junior team after the draft. If you think your player should be in a different division, please send an email to AOR_PA_baseball@gci.net. The best way to demonstrate your player’s ability is to go to the preseason clinics and talk with the coaches running the clinics to discuss the appropriate level for your child. Our goal is to help your player develop to best of his/her abilities while having loads of fun. What size bat can my player use? Little league softball at all levels can use bats up to 21/4 inches. They can be up to 33 inches in length (34 for Junior/Senior level play). Little league baseball at divisions Major and below (age 12 and below) the maximum bat diameter is also 21/4 inches. The bat may be up to 33 inches in length and MUST have the label "BPF 1.15" or less. There are NO grandfathered bats this year. Junior level baseball bats can be up to 25/8 inches in diameter and up to 33 inches in length. Wood bats are permissible in both baseball and softball. AOR recommends all other male players wear a cup during all practices and games for injury prevention. |
